Yesterday, I attended my first PR Real World held by the Georgia Chapter of PRSA! The all day event look place at the Loudermilk Center in Atlanta with more than 200 guests attending. The program consisted of 4 interactive sessions, where the students seek advice from professionals and learn about what interests them in PR.
I woke up at the crack of dawn to try to beat the traffic. For some reason, there was practically no cars in downtown Atlanta at 7a.m. on a Friday morning... So strange! I was super early to the event, but its better to be an hour early than a minute late! :)
I chose to attend informational sessions about social media, non-profit organizations, and travel/tourism. Representatives from MS&L, Georgia Aquarium, IHG, The Home Depot and many others talked about everything you need to know about PR. I even had a chance to get my resumé critiqued! All of the PR professionals were extremely personable and eager to answer my questions.
I was extremely lucky to meet the student director of the UGA PR agency. (Did I mention, Britni and I are the new co-directors and founders of GCSU's new PR agency??) I felt like I needed a little more guidance about how the firm would work. Luckily, I ran into my old friend, a PR major at Flagler, who holds a position in the on campus PR firm at her school. She said she would be happy to answer any questions I had about GCSU's new firm! I'm glad we ran into each other!
Overall, PR real world was extremely beneficial. I met many new contacts, and I feel like I have a better distinction between the different types of Public relations I can go into. I will be at Real World 2011-- you can count on it!
